I'm Getting Married - Episode 7
I needed no one to tell me the wedding was going to be put on hold. In Nigeria, these sort of marriages almost never happen, I got scared, what if the operation is not successful, what if he dies in the process? I thought about a thousand possible negative outcomes till I became tired.
My legs were healing and it was almost time for me to start moving around on a wheelchair pending when I'm fully healed.
My girls came to see me every other day and whenever they left me alone, I could sense some form of depression building up in me. Why did all these have to happen? Was I cursed? It was weeks to my wedding and all I could think of was if there were powers against my wedding.
Sometimes I console myself by telling myself that even Cinderella's wedding was threatened yet she lived happily ever after with her Prince. My case could take a similar route, I presumed.
The next day, Nonso and his father flew to India. Leaving Madame Lucy and I together. It was then that I realized how much she actually felt for me.
She took extra care of me from day to day, cooked for me, massaged my bones, she worked hard to make me comfortable, at first it all seemed strange and scary, but as time went by, it became fun.
She went on to teach me how best to please her son, she told me stories of Nonso's childhood days, and confided in me.
Learning from her was such a pleasure and I never wanted it to end.
Days turned to weeks and two weeks later, the surgery was successful, Nonso and I chatted on FaceTime, we were glad to have survived the accident and I couldn't wait to hug him.
My legs were better, I could walk with aid and the pain subsided.
One cold morning, my mom walked in to my room in the hospital looking very moody, I got scared and started to cry already, I was done with bad news and I couldn't bear to accept whatever was coming next.
"Diana", she began, she wore an ankara gown I recognized because I've seen it on her a lot of times, she usually wore it whenever she was happy, or was it whenever I was happy? I couldn't recall.
"Nonso will be back tomorrow" she said, and slowly started smiling, my mom successfully pranked me, but I didn't mind, I was very happy!
Nonso's mom came to see me later, she couldn't stay long because she had to plan Nonso's welcome back party.
Uju, Nneka and Amaka also came, we talked a while and everyone was happy. Apparently, Amaka had a new guy chasing her, she wanted to date him but was having double mind so she just ended up flirting with him, we advised her and teased her, mostly teased her though but she perfectly understood us.
I zoned out.
Nonso will be back and we'll get well soon and the wedding planning will resume, or so I thought.
