Obiageli - Episode 20

Chidinma had married Nonso, Kalu had found a girl he was finally serious with called Chisom from the neighbouring village. Ego still tried to gain Uche's attention though never approached Obiageli directly again, Chiamaka was still trying to get Ifeanyi to marry her especially after Okafor had rejected his offer to marry Obiageli, and Kelechi just continued his business of tapping palmwine.

Her age mates were getting married and Obiageli wondered why her mother was adamant about her going to college. She found it difficult to sneak out too as her mother hadly slept these days.

She went about her normal activities and finally saw Uche at the market on Eke day

"Why did you come to my house?"she asked

"I wanted to see you..Is that wrong?" he asked as they walked  while she bought things

"No..but my mother..she didn't like it"

He was silent as they continued buying

"I heard you and Ego had a fight while I was away"he said

"She was the one that attacked me o"Obi said

"She won't hurt you again, I warned her severely, you're my woman, she's just my friend and should respect that" he said. Even though his friends had suggested he married both of them, he didn't tell her that, because it was outstrageous, who was going to be the first wife and he didn't want to die early, he preferred his father's pattern, besides it was only Obiageli he wanted.

She bit her lip nervously, wondering if he had also heard she had drowned Ego

"How did the initiation go?" She asked instead, collecting tomatoes

"It was fine" he was silent as he put more tomatoes into the basket

"Are you going to come tonight?" he asked as he saw Kalu and Kelechi coming towards them, She glanced at them then adjusted her basket

"If I can sneak out"She said

"Remember you have to come early...its Eke" he said, dropping money for her, she smiled at him as he walked away with them.

Oluchi sat down with Okafor on the verandah

'Nneanyi" she said

"What is it?" not wanting anyone to disturb him, Eberechi was seriously ill and he feared it  might take her, he didn't need more stress from his other wives, Ezinma and Oluchi had steered clear till now

"What do you want?" he asked again

She watched him"There's something I want to talk to you about "She began

He looked at her "eheh..what about?"

She paused"it is about our child "

He sat up.."Are you pregnant again?" that would be a miracle

"No.." She shook her head"wish I was..

"The thing is..She..she can't get married"

He looked at her, then again

"What do you mean she can't get married..?"

She swallowed and looked down playing with her fingers as she went into details about everything the Dibia had said....When she finished, he was silent, staring into space then he suddenly stood up and left her there. She began to cry especially as he refused to see her and talk to her for days, She had shattered his dreams but two heads were better than one and she knew together they would be able to tell her.

Obiageli arrived​​​​​ in the forest, everywhere was so dark, under their tree, she began looking around in fear. Alone in the forest in the middle of the night, wasn't she a witch and Uche a wizard, what if he didn't come, what if a wild animal attacked her, she glanced around, the sounds of  crickets and frogs frightened her, what if...Someone held her around the neck and she shrieked till he closed her mouth....

"Shit, girls scream"he said

She turned around and hit him

"I thought it was a ghost or somebody else, besides is it now you supposed to be coming"

"You supposed to come first remember.." he said smirking at her horror"besides were you expecting someone else" at her frown he burst into laughter

"I was scared"she said folding her arms

"Sorry..." he said with sarcasm as he pulled her into his arms.

Obiageli had missed him a lot, who wouldn't, he was one of the most wanted youngmen in Chiolu presently and had been rumored to be from the gods when he was born, his mother had been warned not to give birth after him but Mazi Ozor had thought it a fallace, now she had died. Uche himself didn't believe any of it, he lived his life believing there were no gods governing it and his mother had died out of coincidence.

" I thought you should be used to the dark by now, my beautiful jewel"he said pulling away

She frowned and moved away

"Uche, my mother is getting suspicious"

​​​​He paused then"of what?"he asked

"Your visit to our house got her thinking.. She feels we..."

"Obim you shouldn't bother about anyone, its just us okay.."he said pulling her back to him, She looked up at him then nodded

"I got bored during the initiation" he said"I missed you, thought about you all day"

"All day?" She chuckled feeling his arm "you didn't think about food, or the tasks you had to do or.."

He laughed and tilting up her face, kissed her.

They sat under the tree staring at each other, he laced her fingers in his

"Tell me you love me Obi"

She blushed and looked down, he tilted up her face"Obi.."

"I love you Uche"

"Then you would marry me...when the time comes" he said, he knew of all her suitors already

She smiled and looked down again"you know you're the only one for me"she said

"Okay" he said and traced her lips with his finger, feeling flattered "I'm not going to marry any other woman Obim....just you"he said and she believed him.

They laid on the grass fingers laced, staring at the stars.
