Obiageli - Episode 3
Two years later
Ezinma was pounding, directing her children Nnenna and Ikenna on the items to bring for the soup, Eberechi was breaking melon which was on a tray on lap, while Adaeze drew indigo on her body.
Oluchi watched these from her hut as she looked at her friend Adanna who had come to visit her from the neighbouring Village. Adanna was married with children, five to be precise, she was said to have the belly of a pumpkin, she was second wife to Mazi Amaechi.
"Oluchi" she said "why you still crying?"
"I'm still worried, I'm getting old, girls younger than me have bore four"
"How long is your marriage, five years" Oluchi didn't reply"see I understand you should be worried but your husband is not even complaining "she continued
Oluchi looked at her" Is he not?"she cleaned her sore eyes"you are not in my compound, the treatment I get from these women"
"So what, are you married to them?"
"You are a woman like me Adanna, how can you not understand"
"Okay..I do" a silence, Adanna was thinking then she leaned forward
"If you are so bent on having a child, I have one herbalist" she began
"I am tired of herbalists.." Oluchi cut her off
"See he is not really a herbalist..let me say eh..a wizard in those matters, he can solve your problem" she said leaning backwards
Oluchi was staring at her"he can?..Ada even the chief priest of this village has failed"she burst into crying "what have I done?'
Ada watched her friend cry then stood up
"Since you just want to cry and won't listen, I have some soup to prepare"
When Oluchi did not reply she stood up and walked out of the compound.
Oluchi was sweeping the compound, Nkechi Eberechi's first daughter came and passed without a greeting as was custom, Adaeze passed, she greeted good morning but did not take the broom from her, Oluchi looked up
"Adaeze is that how you are brought up, you would watch me sweep the compound"
"I thought.."
"Is my daughter your help or your child..eh..Oluchi" Eberechi came out shouting
"I just.." Oluchi began
"Hey hold it, if you can't sweep where you will live, leave the compound for us, and if your waist is paining you, go look for help from the gods.."she blurted
"I mearnt no harm, I only said.." She swallowed"I am not the giver of children like you said, Chukwu gives children "
"Give my husband a child, thats all you are here for...empty vessel, barren woman until then you are a child in this house..not a wife"
Okafor was in his usual chair in the verandah using a chewing stick to clean his mouth, he was hearing shouts from the backyard..if it wasn't Eberechi and Ezinma, it was Ezinma and Oluchi and if was not that, it was Oluchi and Eberechi, he chuckled.. It was the latter now he supposed..women
"Nneanyi Daalu.."a boy on bicycle greeted him
"Ah..Ekene how is your father?" he asked, the boy was smiling sheepishly as he tried to steady his younger brother on the bicycle who was staring widely
"This your brother Uchenna is getting bigger everyday, which day was he born here..how old is he now?"
"Three years old uncle"
"Three..oh..years have really passed" he spat out then"where are you up to now?"
"To hunt uncle, I set some traps I want to check "Ekene replied
" you are going hunting with a three year old..hope you won't end up trapping him"they laughed, the little boy was still staring at him

Ekene began riding away, the little boy kept looking at him. okafor shook his head, children, he began thinking about sons again, if he had sons, they would be great hunters, even wrestlers..the only son he had was a rascal,always with ball..he hissed as the stood up, adjusted his wrapper and went inside to go take his cutlass and inspect his farm.
