Tears Of Summayah - Episode 2
Sumayyah woke up early the next day with a pounding headache. She had only managed to squeeze in a few minutes of sleep the night before. Because the importance of education always triumphed comfort, Sumayyah resisted the urge to snuggle back into the warmth of her bed. So, despite the overwhelming fatigue she was feeling, she got out of bed to prepare for school.
Her shower done in ten minutes, she clothed herself in the brown and white uniform she had set out the night before. Grabbing her glasses, she walked out of the living room and found her father sitting in his chair, reading a newspaper. She sat on the chair next to his and looked over at what he was reading.
"This world gets worse every day." He said, eyeing an article about yet another case where a young woman was rap-d. Sumayyah shuddered at the thought and looked away.
"Dad, I am ready for school," She told him, motioning towards her backpack.
Mallam Yusuf smiled and folded the newspaper. "Oh, my dear…" He began to say until Hajia Fatima called him from the kitchen. "That is good to hear." He finished. Mallam Yusuf patted her head before he rose from his chair to join his wife in the kitchen.
Soon after, her mother walked into the living room and asked, "Sumayyah, are you going to school soon?"
Sumayyah nodded. "Yes, I am ready and will be on my way soon"
Her mother scowled and shook her head

. "Without breakfast? Please wait. It should be ready soon." Her mother said, before returning to the kitchen.
"I can't wait, Mom! I will get in trouble if I'm late and there are some activities happening before class today." She quickly explained.
Hajia Fatima turned back to her, looking very disappointed. "Sumayyah, you know very well that you will get sick if you do not take good care of yourself. Your health is more important."
Sumayyah let out a sigh and agreed to wait. After a few minutes, Hajia Fatima beckoned her into the kitchen to have a bite of food and also pick up her packed lunch box. Sumayyah hurriedly gulped down her food and after a few minutes, was ready to leave. She hugged both her parents, waved goodbye to them and was almost out of the kitchen when her father cleared his throat and said,
"Sumayyah."
She stopped and turned around to face him.
"Yes, sir?"
"About our discussion last night…” He paused. It seemed to Sumayyah that her father was finding it hard to put his thoughts into words. After a while, he continued. “In shaa Allah, your intended and his family will be here this afternoon. Could you please come home early after school today, so you can meet them?".
Summayah instantly became nervous, but she quickly shook the feeling away.
"Of course, dad." she said with a nod.
He just smiled and continued to stare down at the newspaper that was stretched flat on the table.
Finally, Sumayyah walked out the door and made her way to school. The whole time she walked, she couldn't help but think about what the afternoon had in store for her.
