The Twist - Episode 45

Amaka drove nonstop towards her house.

The picture of Chidimma lying in her own pool of blood filled her head.

She stifled a sob and increased speed.

Tears rolled down her cheeks freely.

Stella! Oh God! So it was Stella.

What has she not done for Stella? She remembered the how they went to shopping together, eateries, amusement parks and even the cash gifts she gave her on countless occasions.

Stella! She prayed Bashir will catch her and she will personally handle her case.

But that will be later, her one thought now was to rush home and save her only daughter.

She noticed people were staring at her iconic car with curiosity.

The tinted glass made it difficult for her to see the expression on their faces.

She maintained her speed and wished her daughter is still alive.

She reached home and saw 2 police cars in front of their house.

There are people in front of the house and the policemen were trying to keep away the press from entering the compound.

When they saw the Rolls Royce, they became alert.

The press people rushed towards the car with ear deafening noise.

The policemen cleared the way for Amaka to enter the house.

One of the police men opened the gate for her and she drove in.

Amaka parked the car inside the compound and came down.

With pounding heart, She looked around hysterically and held the first police officer that approached her by the collar.

"Where is my daughter Chidimma? Where is she? What happened to her? Tell me she is not dead!"

"Calm down madam, your daughter is in the hospital. She is absolutely fine

Replied the police officer.

"Which hospital, I need to see her now!"

Amaka yelled.

A policewoman slowly calm her down and guided her into the house.

"Everything is under control madam. We will take you to the hospital later. You need to rest"

said the female police officer.

Amaka felt weak.

She slumped on the couch and cried with relief.

So she is alive.

The policewoman put on the air conditions and brought a glass of cold water for her to drink.

That was when Amaka noticed how thirsty she was.

She swallowed the water in one gulp and demanded for another one.

The policewoman brought another glass of water for her and then the door flew open.

They both turned around and saw Mark standing drunkenly in front the door.

Amaka rushed to him and hugged him tight.

Mark held onto the door frame to steady himself.

Amaka was weeping.

"Honey I was kidnapped. Bashir saved me"

The policewoman stared at the emotional scene and excuse herself.

Mark gently closed the door, pushed Amaka away and went to the liquor cabinet.

He was full of booze.

He opened a bottle of French whiskey and took a long pull from the bottle.

Amaka was staring at him in a confused state.

"Mark, I just told you I was kidnapped and all you did was to start drinking? Our daughter is in the hospital and...."

"Who is the father of Chidimma?" growled Mark. "Excuse me?"

"Who is the father of Chidimma and I won't repeat myself again"

Mark said, The menacing threat in his voice was unmistakable.

"Mark I am not in the mood for this rubbish...."

The heavy back hand slap tossed Amaka over the settee.

Mark rushed to her and landed another heavily slap on her cheek.

Amaka screamed and held her reddened cheek with both hands.

"I am going to kill you this minute if you keep on lying to me"

hissed Mark.

He grabbed her by the throat with one hand and smashed the whiskey bottle with the other free hand.

He threatened to stab her with it.

Terrified, Amaka screamed.

"I will talk! I will talk!" "Who is the father?!"

"Dr. Uche"

sobbed Amaka.

"What? Who?"

"Dr. Uche is the father of Chidimma. Please don't kill me, I will explain"

Amaka flashed back to when she visited Dr. Uche in his office that very day she met Mark. Before then Dr. Uche was her secret lover.

It had started the day she went for a medical check up in his hospital and after examining her in his office, they had talked and being such a rampant young girl that was always ready for fun; Dr. Uche had fallen for her charm and they had made love in his office that day.

Since then they have been secretly seeing each other and making love all the time. It was on one of the occasions she noticed she was pregnant.

She had went to Dr. Uche's office that very day and broke the news to him.

"Are you out of your mind? Don't you know this can destroy my marriage?"

Dr. Uche had said.

"Don't shout at me.

Retorted Amaka.

"You are no longer a kid, why did you allow yourself to get pregnant?"

Dr. Uche had asked in a more calmed voice.

"I am sorry ok? Its a mistake. Besides, I don't have intention of keeping the baby. It will ruin My father's reputation. So that's why I came. You are a doctor, you know what to do"

Amaka had said. That was when the door opened and Mark breezed in.

Amaka finished talking and sobbed uncontrollably.

Holding his head, Mark walked with unsteady steps to the couch and sat down.

So he had been training Dr. Uche's daughter all these while.

Why? Stella once said he is impotent.

That was the reason they have no issue after 9 years of marriage.

Dr. Uche! Unbelievable!

"Darling I am sorry, I did not do it intentionally. You walked into the picture and before I could even think of what to do you proposed."

Amaka sobbed. She went to where Mark was sitting and made to hold him.

Fuming with rage what his life had suddenly become, he violently pushed Amaka away.

Amaka tripped and fall down, her head smashed on the glass table in the center of the sitting room and the broken glass split her head open.

Blood and brains oozes out from the fatal wound.

Mark stood there staring at her in shock.

The drunken haze suddenly cleared from his eyes.

The door opened and he looked up; standing in the door was the towering figure of Chief C.B Okpara...

phew! What a long day! I spent 18 hours putting several things together at the same time.

I am so happy we have come this far.

Like I said in the previous episode, Tomorrow (3rd February) is my birthday and I can't wait to see your good wishes for your humble servant! The end of the story is already near.
