Working Cases - Episode 2
Busting Balls.
“Hey, Nico. You're still alive, I see.” Her voice woke me. I sat up straight to find her smiling down at me. All episodes of this story can be found here >> https://www.ebonystory.com/story/working-cases . (
“Nice to see you too, Natalie.” I forced a smile, noticing for the first time that I had a pounding headache.
She sat down beside me and, carefully avoiding my eyes, asked, “Any progress?”
“No,” I answered gratefully. Even though I could not expect to have any friends in the Police Department for a long time,—possibly the rest of my probably very short life—Natalie was the next best thing. She wasn’t foolish enough to help me with my cases, but she had developed—in the very few weeks we had spent together—an eye for whenever I needed someone to talk to. “I've walked into a dead end and I don’t know a way out.”
“Mmmhh,” She turned to face me, her eyes serious, “off the record, if I was to tell you how my morning went, it would be totally harmless, right?”
I perked up immediately. Natalie was asking if it was okay to help me with my investigation. She found something, and she wanted to know if it was safe to tell me about it. I brought out my phone and typed, It’s best we speak like this. Walls have ears
I passed it to her. “I would love to hear about your day.”
She smiled, hit backspace, and typed her own message, “So, this morning, I found a nice flat at the edge of town. Just about a half an hour’s drive from here, thought you might be interested.” It was murder, you know that right????
“I already found a place. It’s pretty darn expensive, though. How much does your nice flat cost?” I suspected it. Even have this big theory about it. All of it useless. No shred of evidence.
“Three rooms—I know you like lots of space—and it costs, wait for it, a hundred thousand naira a year.” Well, I talked to Gabe. He saw three men leave Duncan’s house after the shots were fired. He recognized one of them, Lanre Abidemi.
“I’ll take it. That’s a bargain. The owner must either be very considerate, or very stupid.” Who’s Gabe? You mean THE Lanre Abidemi?? Are you serious about the flat???
She frowned. “Good. I’ll tell my mom you're interested in the place. Take you there after work?” Gabe… autistic orphan boy, wanders around a lot. Yes, THE Lanre, shocked me too. I'm serious about the flat.
I winced. “Your mom’s the owner? Sorry, she isn’t stupid. She must be pretty considerate. Yeah, after work would be nice.” Oh, yeah… Gabe! I’ll check Lanre out. And the house. Sorry about calling your mom stupid. (
“No worries. See you later.” She passed the phone back to me and walked off quickly. I scanned the screen to see what she had typed. Good luck. Yeah, that was a bit dumb. I forgive you though. I’ve been trying to get her to increase the rent for ages.
I smiled and pocketed my phone. I strode to my car, seeing the dots connect in front of me. It had been there all along. Lanre Abidemi was the string that held it all together, and I was going to pay him a visit. He was going to tell me all I needed to know and I was going to make him. I would later get to know that at about the time I pulled out of the driveway on my way to it, three men had walked into Lanre Abidemi’s house, and someone had put three bullets in his head.
