Zakia - Episode 4
The battlefield was somewhere faraway.
We'd driven through the thick forest for several hours already, even making a few brief stops somewhere inbetween, and yet, our destination only seemed to stretch to a farther distance.
'Where are we even going?' I'd thought impatiently to myself on many occasions..
Nonetheless, the moment the Amir whispered, "We're here," as a matter of fact, I only got incredibly anxious.
I alighted the vehicle just like everyone else, however, the vicinity that surrounded me clouded me with nothing but confusion. The battlefield was nothing like I'd imagined. There was no army waiting to attack us, there was no enemy glaring at us from a distance.
Instead, right in front of us was a small town, dominated by a myriad of dinky huts, that were probably as old as their occupants. The residents were busy with their daily activities at first, oblivious to the fact that we lingered somewhere in the bush, but then, I'd noticed a pregnant woman make the briefest of eye contact towards our direction, and then, she screamed, almost subconsciously.
"They're here!"
"The monsters are here again!" She screamed on top of her lungs, taking to her heels, and urging other residents to do the same.
'Why are we here?'
'Why are they running from us?' I thought mentally to myself. Of course, I didn't dare to say any of it out loud.
Still and all, things only got worse when I heard the Amir (leader) announce

. "Attack!"
And that was how the chaos began.
The troops of men were merciless with the usage of their weapons. They were pulling the trigger just as quickly as they were breathing, chasing after the residents who were obviously scared to death. The Amir (leader) was shooting too, and so was Iman..
Amidst the violence, I was glued to a spot, unable to think straight, unable to move. The sound of bullets smothered the scene, the screams of terrified souls was driving me nauseous. And despite the tension, I still wouldn't let go of my pistol. I'd been warned not to.
Some moments later, and the intensity of the screams drastically reduced, swarm of bodies lay lifeless on the muddy ground, and the town itself seemed almost dead.
'They hadn't done anything wrong.. then, why the attack?' I whispered to myself.
But instead of answers, the gunshots only persisted. I wanted to cry but the tears wouldn't trickle.

. I wanted to yell, but the sound somehow got stuck in my throat. There was something about everything that was happening that reminded me of a similar incident. However, it was all vague and obscured in my head, as my memory seemed quite unable to decipher. It just wasn't clear at the time. And it also didn't take long for the 'war' to eventually come to an end.
But as the entire troop approached me, I knew they were far from pleased with me.. Especially the Amir who threw me a dirty look.
"Get Up!" Kabir (the second-in-command) yelled once they were close enough.
Normally, I would've adhered immediately to his instructions. However, at the time I was still too danunted by everything, and so, it took an incredibly long while for me to gather enough strength to stand on my two feet.. And only in that moment, did I also notice the pregnant woman that'd initially alerted everyone of our evasive presence in the small town.
She was knelt down, and with tears of anguish all over her face.. Still, no one's face showed any compassion towards her.
"Shoot!" The Amir (leader) said to me.
"Shoot her, or you die right now.." He threatened, pointing his gun at me.
I was stuck yet again. I felt the tears I'd been craving for finally tickle down my face, and despite the pleas on the part of the innocent woman, I took my aim right at her forehead, closed my eyes, and pulled the trigger with no hesitation whatsoever.
She died instantly.. And so did her unborn child.
