(A barn in Razim's house. The two friends are arranging tubers of yam. They discuss)
RAZIM: Let's us finish quickly. I can't wait to hear Dinaji's stories about the beast of the Feared forest.
KAIYA: You so idolize him. I don't like him. He is always bullying me
RAZIM: That's because you always disrespect him. I wonder why. He's such a good man.
KAIYA: He saw me at the contest.
RAZIM: (drops a yam) What!!! You know people must not hear (he lowers his voice). Unmarried women are not allowed in wrestling contest, remember. And the wiinner of the contests has a claim on such women who attend. How was he able to see through your disguise? You were dressed as a boy. Did you get too close to me?
KAIYA: (Bursts into tears) I met him before the contest.
RAZIM: Don't cry. Where did he see you?
KAIYA: At the bush, when I was coming. He passed with his men asking for directions. Then he told me to remove my fake whiskers as it is obvious I'm not a boy. I ran off. He later saw me at the contest.
RAZIM: So he has a claim on you. I wondered why he visits my brother so often and always when you are here.
KAIYA: (Laughs) Even if tradition dictates a claim. Would he marry a young boy?
RAZIM: (Hits her head) You are stupid, you know

(He tickles her ears and she runs out of the barn straight into DINAJI's arms)
DINAJI: What is going on here?
KAIYA: We were playing
DINAJI: Playing? For a young woman.
KAIYA: I would prefer you not calling me a woman
DINAJI: Kaiya, what should I call you?
RAZIM: (With worshipping eyes) she prefers to be called a boy
DINAJI: Why?
KAIYA: (Gives Razim the bad eye) do I look like a woman?
DINAJI: (Looks her over) one has to think of such matters before replying
KAIYA: (She pokes his chest with her index finger) Don't call me a woman
(Dinaji steps backwards and Razim looks on with surprise. Some men would have hit her for that action)
DINAJI: Are you a man? Or a boy?
(She leaves in anger. Razim claps)
RAZIM: You are the first person to defeat Kaiya in a battle of words. I thought she was the smartest person ever.
DINAJI: (Smiles) why is she like that? Arrogant, haughty and rude. She even has a man's attitude
RAZIM: I think it's a defensive act.

DINAJI: She's not ugly, what's the criticism for?

KURAQ: (interrupts) she hasn't mature yet. Razim, father calls for you (his younger brother leaves). Why are you so enamored by her?
DINAJI: She interests me.
KURAQ: Should her father be expecting a suitor? I overheard. them saying you have a claim.
DINAJI: We don't do that way where I come from. In my place we pay the bride price.
KURAQ: I wonder about your land
DINAJI: I would take you there.
KURAQ: I hope. Now your friend Zamri is so smart. How did he manage to get the princess in love with him.
DINAJI: My people have a way with women.
KURAQ: That might be true. I heard the wedding is after the next market day
(they walk towards the barn.)
