Believe - Episode 7
You have Qualified
“I feel for her,” Emmanuel said sadly.
“Me too,” Perfect agreed beside him.
“What do you think, Perfect?”
“I believe she scored higher than that boy.” She pointed out at Bode.
“I want to believe so, but could she score more than Anu.”
Perfect sighed. “Are you implying the boy and Ayo are likely to have a tiebreak?”
“Something like that,” Emmanuel said. “Or Anu and the boy are on the same point, with Ayomide behind.”
“I disagree.”
“I even heard Anu was Ayomide’s classmate before Ayo transferred to our school.”
“Emma!” Perfect sighed again. “Where did you hear that?”
“I heard from those students” – he pointed in the direction of some students on blue striped uniform – “over there. It’s like they are Anu’s school mate.”
She looked in the direction Emmanuel was pointing and exclaimed. “That’s First Apex students for sure but still, Ayomide and Anu were never classmates.”
“You sound so sure.”
“Why wouldn’t I be? I was once a student of First Apex. That girl” – she pointed at Anu – “was in JS 1, the first time I came for the Olympiad Quiz TV show and there was no Ayomide in their class

. I was in JS 3 then.”
“Really?”
“Yes. In fact, she looks up to me as her role model.”
“Wow! You are a genius. I would…”
“Oh!” She stopped Emmanuel from speaking further. “Did you hear that?”
“Of course! The quiz master just announced that your school daughter qualified.”
“It’s not only school daughter.” She smiled. “You will see school son.”
“Yes now.

. You said…”
“C’mon shut up and let’s hear Ayo’s score,” she said with the wave of her left hand as if she was trying to scare off a fly. Just then they heard something dissatisfying.
“No hope for Ayomide,” Oreoluwa murmured.
“What did you say, Ore?” Emmanuel demanded.
“I said no hope for Ayo.”
“I heard you the first time,” Emmanuel said with clenched teeth. “I only gave you a chance to change what you said.”
“Stop it,” Perfect pinched Emmanuel and he calmed himself. “You know you were just saying same thing about her minutes ago,” she whispered.
“That was different,”
“No difference.”
The rest of the group just sat and looked on in silence.

“Ayomide,” the quiz master called. “I see you are smiling. Can I know the reason?”
“No, quiz master,” she replied bluntly and noticed that the man felt hurt, so she quickly added, “I just feel I should smile, that’s all.”
“Okay,” he said, not pressing further. “At this end of this round, you answered a total of 15 questions correctly thereby setting a record.”
The audience immediately applauded her without hearing the rest.
“Thereby setting a record in this year’s Olympiad 60 seconds of fame,” he completed. “You have 75 points in round 2 and a total of 130 points at the end of both round 1 and 2.”
The audience cheered her on. The quiz master had to wait for them to quiet down before he continued.
“Congratulations, Ayomide. You have qualified. I will definitely see you in the semifinals.” He slid a finger across his screen and the big screen displayed a breakdown of the contestant’s scores.
The audience didn’t stop applauding until both Ayo and Anu had left the stage.
