In the village of Omupo in Bomina land, there lived a woman, Bimpe and her five children. Of the five children, one was a cripple. His name was Adewale. Adewale had been attacked by measles at the age of three before the use of vaccine got to that land. He therefore became crippled for lack of the right medication.

. Adewale became a burden on his mother and father as well as a subject of derision to the family. But for his wit and wisdom, Adewale was almost useless because he couldn't help with farm work. One day, war broke out between the people of Omupo and I feel, a large and influential town in Southwest Nigeria. The war was so severe and serious that the people of Ile-Ife overtook the whole land. The strong men of Omupo were taken as slaves, their foodstuffs carted away and the rest of the inhabitants of the land driven in to exile. There were epidemics and severe starvation

. Bimpe, whose husband was a hunter had lost him to wild animals in the forest, when she had her last born Akin. Akin was ten years old in the year preceding the war. Toluene and Joke were junior to Adewale, the cripple. Toluene was fifteen years old while Joke, her sister was twelve. Bimpe, as a result of the war, ran out of Omupo town, escaping the hardship as unleashed on it's people by the people of Ile-Ife town.
