Esperance - Episode 13
"Do you look more beautiful or is it because I missed you" I whispered to Claire from behind.. She laughed, her eyes narrowing. "Bring it in" she said as she turned around and spread her arms. We hugged briefly. We chatted for a while at the balcony where I met her. We talked about books we read, how her uncle promised her a phone, everything important and unimportant... "Don't you think you are turning me girlie recently?" I asked her raising an eyebrow.. She giggled "I don't know what you are talking about" she claimed.. Looking away and trying to look queenly and serious. " fine, I'll tell you" I continued " I now talk boys with you...why on earth would.... What have you done to me?! ... I d.." She burst into laughter. "Admit it Neil, you love me enough. Whether you like it or not, you are the only friend I talk to. My classmates think I'm crazy. They keep judging me" she continued laughing.. "They are not judging you, maybe its true...... But I don't care anyway" I answered. "Neil, we talk about boys , but we never talk about girls. Tell me about one" she teased nudging my arm. "We don't .....because there is none, its just mum and then Claire" I said indifferently and referring to the later as if it was someone else. "Have you ever been in love?" She asked "No" I answered

. "You don't want to or you are among the minority who don't believe in it?" She pressed. "I do believe in love, just haven't felt it" I said , smiling. "You are ridiculous ..anyway, you will..... sooner or later" she said looking at her wrist watch. "Let's go to our classes" I said knowing what her gesture meant. "New classes" she corrected, smiling. "And Claire, I got some past examination questions for our upcoming exams" I said turning around. "We'll go over it later pal" she replied taking a left turn .

"When are you writing your O' level exams?" Mum asked while I was doing the dishes. "In a few months" I answered "How's your preparations going?" She asked, looking concerned. I put down the plates, came close to her and leaning on the door near where she stood, cooking and said " mum, don't worry about it, I'll make you proud. I have a new study mate..." "Your girlfriend right?" She said giving me a wry smile. "Mum, she's my friend... Not my..." "Girlfriend" she finished up my words. "Very funny" she exclaimed. "Mum!" I yelled.. "OK, fine. As you wish" she said laughing. . "I think your soup is burning" I said , pointing at the steel pot on the gas cooker. Mum always insisted on having minimal equipments and furniture in the kitchen, so rodents and insects wouldn't have hiding places. That said, we had just a steel kitchen cabinet of only four draws; two on each side, with the gas cylinder kept under it, in the space between the demarcation of the twin line of drawers. A two-burner gas cooker on it. Racks were on the wall for hanging of the utensils... Dishwashing was done manually since we didn't own a dishwasher and plates were kept in a rubber basket on the wooden shelf near the mini refrigerator beside the door. the kitchen floor had a brown carpet and the walls were in an ash colour paint. There was one window with glass louvres , with the blinds always put in curtain clips. "I pray my savings are enough for all the payments" she said, sighing. "Don't worry, there will always be a way" I comforted her..
