Esperance - Episode 14
Few months later "Hello, Neil guess what" Claire's voice showed excitement through the receiver. " Tell me already" I said laughing... "I made it, I made my papers!" She screamed in excitement.. "Really?!" I echoed . "that calls for celebration... But first I'm going to check mine" I said, already getting clothed in goose bumps. "I'm still at the Dale and Dele Cyber caf, you could come here its' just fifty naira Worth of transit fare" she suggested. "Alright, wait up. I'll call you for directions , Give me a minute" I said dropping the call . "Mum, our results are out" I yelled as I ran to the bathroom to have a bath. "Oh! Its out? I have just a thousand naira in my purse, would it be enough?" "Sure" I affirmed . My bath and prep took just a giffy. "Mum, when is your work leave expiring?" I asked as I walked into her room. "I'm going to work next week, the hospital only gave me a one week home stay" she answered with a smile. "Your purse isn't in your bag " I said as I swept through it, finding no resemblance to a purse. "Check my dressing table, it maybe there" she said, sitting up. Looking at her table I saw her purse

"What's the name of the cyber caf?" I asked Claire over the phone as I walked to the bus stop. "Stop at Ota junction and then call me" she answered. "What took you so long Mr." Claire asked as she walked up to where I stood. "If all the buses didn't go AWOL when I needed them I would have been here earlier. I answered with a smile... "Let's go joor.. Always having a reply to all my questions" she joked "Let's go . I can't wait" I said feeling nervous. " it won't take long, besides I made reservations ... Told them I had a friend coming" she chipped as we entered the caf. "Think I'm going to say thanks?" I asked grimacing. She laughed replying "no" . "Here's his reg number" she said as she took my WAEC registration number and gave it to the caf attendant. I sat on the chair there... Not being able to hide my anxiety as I waited. "Ahhhhhhhh!" Claire screamed. I rushed to the computer system she faced. "Neil, your result is even better than mine" she screamed as she hugged me from the side. I couldn't believe my eyes, I even got a 'B' in biology , my most dreaded subject. I turned around and reciprocated her hug. "We made it Claire, come home with me. I could treat you to something. My mum would want to say thanks" She raised her eyebrow in her usual faked questioning look. "For what exactly?" "For everything you've done. For the person you helped me become and .." "Neil, don't get all emotional on me right now" she said looking around. I laughed "you shy now?" I asked, letting go of her. "How much is it ?" I asked as I took the white paper print out of our West African Examinations result. "A thousand five hundred" "Why didn't I ask first" I muttered. "I heard that" Claire said as leaned closer asking "how much have you got" in a whisper. "Just one" I replied. "Right, I can complete it" she said as she squeezed a ruffled five hundred naira note into my Palm. Ensuring no one noticed. "Thanks" I said as I paid and we left.
