Finding Solace - Episode 9

FIONA
Why was I feeling bad? I actually had no reason to be feeling disappointed. I wasn’t his burden and never would be. He only helped me. I shouldn’t be his responsibility. But, if he had known he wouldn’t be there for me all the time, why help me to this level?
I couldn’t say anything ever since he told me he would be travelling, I was just disappointed. What would I have said? I wouldn’t tell him not to travel, would I? He had his own life too; he should care about that more than anything. Right?
He came out of the room and walked to the living room where I sat. I didn’t mean to look up but I did and surprisingly our gazes met and locked and we were both quiet. 
“I am so sorry Fiona.” He started. “This is beyond me. I just spoke to someone who should be here any moment.”
I shook my head with a smile. “It’s okay Nick, you’ve done lots of things for me and I cannot just tell you to pause your life because of me. You have your own life too. Whatever you think is best for me, I am okay with it.”
That seemed to calm him down a little. He walked closer to me and surprisingly took his hands in mine.
“Fiona, thank you. You know I want nothing more than to help you right?”
I nodded.
He brought out a phone- a Samsung phone and handed to me.
“I promise I will be calling every time

. I’ve spoken with someone, she should be here by tomorrow. She will take you out and everywhere you want to go. There is a sim card inside and I just recharged some amount you might not finish in a month, on it.  Also, my number is saved on it with the Doctor’s and the psychologist’s. So all you need is to give them a call when the need arises. I will do what I need to do on time and get back . Okay?”
I smiled more. I could see the anxiety , sincerity and how deeply he cared on his face. I placed my hand on his left shoulder without thinking.
“Its okay Nicky. I will be fine. I am an adult.” Then I punched him on the shoulder.
That made him laugh. “I care about you. You know that?”
I nodded.
“Chicken”
“Fowl.” I retorted before collecting the phone from him.

Just as we started punching each other playfully, the door rang and I went to get it. A man was at the front door, he was tall with olive-brown skin. His black hair was curled and combed back. He was wearing a Polo-shirt ,pair of soft leather sandals and in his hands was a bottle of wine. His lashes were thick and beautiful; the mystery in his eyes was replaced by his dashing smile. He was the kind of man women usually found irresistible.
“Hi.”  I said to him.
“Hello.” He greeted back, widening the curve of his lips as the smile increased. “I am Noah and I just moved to the neighborhood, like the next house. So I just thought of coming over and say ‘hi’ to my closest neighbor.” He handed me the wine which I found disturbing to collect. 
“Hi..I am Nick.”
I heaved a sigh of relief as I heard Nick come behind me.
“Oh, hello bro.”
They shook hands.
“I just moved into the next house and thought of saying hi to my neighbors while introducing myself.”
Nick collected the bottle. “Wow! You really know my taste bro. I am Nick, this is Fiona.”
“I am Noah and I must say, you two are such a beautiful couple.”
Nick chuckled. “No, we are friends actually.”
The guy looked surprised. “Oh! I am so sorry, I just thought …you know. Well, it’s nice to meet you Fiona and Nick. Have a great day.” He shook hands with Nick and waved to me before going.
“Wow! He seems nice.” Nick commented before closing the door. “We should visit soon, once I get back.”
I was quiet. There was just something about that man that was just off and I couldn’t understand.
“Are you okay Fi.”
“Sure Nick. DO you mind if I go lie down a little?” 
He looked at me curiously but then shrugged. “Alright babe.

I laughed and shook my head. Then I began to climb the stairs to my room.

NARRATOR
He got back into his new apartment and drew the curtain. Then he sat down and opened the laptop. He replayed the scene where he had gone to their front door. He leaned closer to the screen and observed. 
The look on her face was unmistakable. She didn’t recognize him at all and that was a good thing.  She hasn’t changed one bit, she was still as beautiful as ever, even with her hair undone. 
Getting this house was easier than he had thought  and the best part was that the guy would not be around for a while, plenty time to work his way in…
