Happy Never After - Episode 25

“Well, she needs to open her eyes already, it’s been five days….”

“Well, the doctor said it was a miracle that we got to the hospital on time. It could have been worse. She got hit. I shouldn’t have allowed her to drive us…”

“That bastard is dead, that is such a relief….”

“Oh my gosh! Think her eyes just flickered,  girls look!”

Alicia finally opened her eyes slowly as she saw her two friends with her sister looking at her, expectantly.

“Hey girls!”

“Halleluyah! She’s alive!” shouted Camil as they all hugged her.

Finally they pulled away as they all talked at once. Alicia wasn’t still sure about what happened. The last thing she remembered was being in the car with her sister. Now she was lying on the hospital bed, with different tubes hanging around her.

“What happened?” she managed to ask.

“You just zoned out,” replied her sister. “It was God’s miracle that we didn’t crash…”

She sighed. “How long was it?”

“It’s been five days,” replied Camil. “I am so sorry, we heard everything that happened

Alicia managed to smile just as Hannah came in. There were several bandages on her arm and around her head. She smiled as she saw Alicia.

“That’s my hero….” she said, walking towards her and bending to embrace her. “Good to see you alive,” she said, pulling away.

“We are both survivors,” Alicia said and then suddenly asked, “what of Faith?”

The girls exchanged glances.

“Someone should say something,” Alicia said, straightening up, looking confused. She couldn’t read the expression on her friend’s face.

“Well, sister,” began her sister. “I am so sorry, we thought…”

“No, no!” snapped Alicia. “Please don’t  tell me she died too…”

“It will take a thousand Daniel to kill me,” said Faith, coming in, followed by a limping Fabian.

When Alicia saw her, she cried,   ignored her laughing friends, removed the stuff hanging around her and ran to hug her friend and Fabian at the same time.

“Easy, easy on the arm,” Fabian said.

“I can’t believe you two are alive! Oh my God!”

They pulled away.

“How?” asked Alicia, from one to the other.

“Well, that bastard almost had me, Alicia. But he forgot I am a doctor. I know how to fake death so he thought I was dead. I heard that I was exonerated and was supposed to leave the jail the following week but I got a visitor and guess who it was, David. He came to gloat that he was finally married to you. It was there he told me the truth about himself for he knew I knew. He told me he would be back and I was certain he wouldn’t come alone. He would want to kill me.

I knew that he would come back. He bribed one of the officers to plant something in my food, what he didn’t know was that the officer’s mother was once my patient and he owed me. So he told me the truth. By the time he came back, I was already dead, or so the doctor thought. I asked the officer to switch the stuff he gave me with another which I asked him to get from the hospital. It would allow me to be dead for 48 hours only. Doctors use it to induce a coma. So when Daniel came back, he took my body and threw it into the lake. But thankfully, I was already dead, so I couldn’t drown. By the time I opened my eyes, I was washed ashore and some fishermen found me. I was there for some time before taken to the hospital.”

“The same hospital where Lucas was taken to,” replied Faith.

Alicia sighed. “What a relief! I’m so happy that you are both alive.”

Fabian smiled.

“I owe you a lot of apologies, Fabian. Would you ever forgive me?”

HE smiled and nodded. “Sure, we are all alive for a reason,” he extended his arms to her as they embraced.

“So, Fabian’s name has been cleared and the polices know that he was set up. Lucas also testified to everything so, the house has been locked down.

. Daniel was given a befitting burial.”

Alicia sighed. “I caused everything,” she said, resting her head against Fabian’s chest.

“That’s in the past now,” said Tonia. “You all are survivors.”

“What about the boy?” Alicia asked Hannah. “The one with the blind woman who Daniel killed as well.”

“Once everything is settled, he will be staying with me,” replied Hannah.

“Well, thank God. Let’s just go ask the doctor when you are fit to go,” said Lydia. They all left the room leaving Fabian and Alicia behind.

She had so many things to say but just didn’t how to start. The picture of herself making love to David flashed in her head, she swallowed, with tears trickling down her cheeks, disgusted by it all.

“It’s okay,” Fabian whispered to her. “It’s okay. We will pick up the pieces together,” he whispered into her ears, pulling her into his embrace.

And she believed him, even though she knew she didn’t deserve him anymore…
