Obiageli - Episode 15
Sneak out
Oluchi was brooding in her hut, thinking of her problems.
Should she go to another native doctor to get another child?, no one was disturbing her again or calling her barren but she felt she needed another child, Obiageli was grown. She knew though that for another child to come Obiageli would have to die, the native doctor had made it clear that Obiageli's attention could not be shared with another child ...hmmph, and that would also mean starting all over, God forbid, she rather concentrated on the one she had....besides Obiageli had turned out well even though she couldn't perform most duties of a girl her age especially when she got to her husband's....she paused and sighed placing her chin on her hand, her marriage issue again, She was all grown now, but how does she tell Okafor that his favorite daughter could not get married..he sure would not take it likely, he might even drive her from the house....but was this better than having no child at all...she sighed..no, she had just postponed the inevitable.
It was now known that she was not barren but did the child even know she was from the waters, a river princess, She must know, why wouldn't she?...She had not indicated anything though to show that she knew anything...but why react to common pepper, it was useless even teaching her anything about cooking, She would never marry..
Obiageli came in and closed the door, it was obvious she had been smiling but hid it well "Mama.."she said
"You girls took so long, hope there was no problem"
"No mama, we went to brother Ekene's house, he was repairing his roof"she said
"Oh ok.." She paused "are you hungry? "
"Eh mama, a little..I ate there"
"You can eat the remaining porridge in the pot"
"Ok mama...." She paused "are you okay?"she had noticed her mother's downcast mood
"Yes o...I am fine" Oluchi stood up and dished the food for her to distract herself while Obiageli went to have her bath...
Obiageli tried to maintain her excitement in front of her mother but was failing miserably, she fiddled with the food
"I guess your not hungry" Oluchi said
Obiageli looked up "I'm hungry....just thinking" She said and tapped on the plate, ate once, then turned the food again
"You're excited about something...tell me"Oluchi observed
"No mama, Chiamaka just said we would draw indigo tomorrow on our bodies"
"Oh Ok" Oluchi said wondering...but decided to ignore it.
That night Obiageli tossed and turned on her bed as she glanced at the door in the dark, it was sure to be locked, she looked at her mother who was soundly asleep on the floor, leaving the bed for her. Obiageli wondered how she did that, the first time she had even tried sleeping on the floor, she developed body pains for a week.
Obiageli still laid facing up two hours after her mother had slept, the night was silent but Uche's words on the note played on her mind..
"Meet me at the village Square tonight" it had simply said
She stood up and quietly opened the window, breeze came in...She glanced back at her mother to be sure she was still sleeping, Oluchi stirred and coughed.. She climbed quietly out of it and shut it back softly..Oluchi adjusted on the mat.
