The Emerald Chase - Episode 43

** Silence filled the room, except for Catherine's silent sobs.

The air was thick with tension.

Tension that no one was ready to break.

A comfortable yet uncomfortable tension.. Each person was content with the silence because one way or the other, they were each lost in their own thoughts.

Darren was stricken with unexplainable shock.. His face was emotionless and his eyes held none either.. Frederick was shocked at first and then his shock turned into confusion and then anger..

"Nonsense!!!! It's all bullsh-t!!" He yells..

Chief Benson was fuming at the fact that his dumb wife had blurted out the truth..

"Tell me this f*cker over here is not my brother.. Tell me mother!!!"

"I'm sorry.. I'm so sorry"

Catherine cries confirming his worst fears.

The stepbrother whom he had grown up envying and eventually hating for being so perfect turned out to be his true brother after all.

He gulps more wine.. Silence engulfed the room one more time, as no one dared speak... Darren stares at Catherine, long and hard..

"If you have something to say you better say it now"

his voice was low yet sharp and stern...

He growls and she flinches at his harsh tone..

Catherine flinches again as she nods frantically...

"I...i...i.got pregnant with you Darren.. My baby boy.. But your father.. He wasn't ready for any children. He wasn't ready to take responsibility. He was ambitious, hungry for power, wealth and fame and he thought having a child would be a stumbling block... He wanted you aborted Darren.. But I couldn't.. I couldn't do it and because of that we were always at loggerheads, quarreling all the Time..."

She stops and stares at Darren for a reaction but his face was expressionless, blank.. She wipes a lone tear cascading down her cheeks..

"I was seven months gone when I found out from a friend that your father had gotten married.. I didn't want to believe it until he confirmed it himself.. I was heartbroken, devastated, lost.. Even though he kept assuring me he only married Bridget, for money. Her parents were rich then.. He swore he loved me only... I was so devastated that I had a breakdown.. That's how much I was in love with him.. During my eight month, I went into labour and I had to give birth prematurely... I was depressed.. I couldn't even feed you.. Your father had practically abandoned me.. Then one fateful day, your father came and took you away when you were three months old, claiming he wanted to give you a better life. Something which I couldn't.. Your father was cruel to me but I found myself going back to him each time all In the name of love.. I don't know how he did it, but his wife accepted you after he fed her lies. She adopted you without knowing the child she was adopting was actually his mistress's.... We continued to see each other behind his wife's back. Four years down the line, I was told Bridget, his wife had died in a car accident.... I was always there for Benson after that. I wanted to get closer to you too my son. Believe me I did. I tried.. But your father sent you out of the country. How was I supposed to get close to you? I tried to get closer to you at every opportunity that I got, but you always pushed me away. Believe me Darren, I love you.. I do.. I know I was a coward..."

Darren seethes and Catherine chokes on her tears..

"This is a pathetic story mother dearest!! Pathetic!!" Frederick growls. "

I should have told you but you were always out of the country.. You never liked me Darren, and I was scared you'll hate me more when you learn the truth.

I know I can't justify my actions and I'm truly sorry"

she stares at him with pleading eyes but he doesn't budge.

"I would rather die than accept you as my brother.. Or perhaps I would rather kill...."

Before Frederick could complete his sentence, six policemen barge into the room..

"Drop your weapon! Now!"

Frederick frowns, his eyes growing dark

"You.... It was a trap wasn't it? That stupid crappy story about Darren being your son was just a distraction right? So you could buy more time? Huh?!! Why didn't I think of this before!! Crap!!"

"Lower your weapon Sir else..."

"Else what?!!"

Frederick reaches for Emerald and grabs her forcefully by the hair, pulling her towards him..

He seethes, wrapping one arm around Emerald's neck..

"You little snitch!! You came to trap me huh? I'm going to have the pleasure of killing you before they nab me. I'm Frederick Benson.. I'm invincible got it?!!"

He yells as he pulls at her hair and she screams..

"Let her go you pr-ck!!!"

Elvis shouts from across the room and Fred turns abruptly firing immediately. Elvis groans as the bullet hits his shoulders..

"Anyone wants to dare me now?!! Get back policeman!!! Else I'm shooting everyone here... Every...."

He trails off and groans when Emerald steps on his foot harshly, and elbows his abdomen.. Before anyone could comprehend what was happening, Fred was already lunging at her about to shoot.. "Emerald!!" Darren sprouts forward suddenly pushing her to the ground just a second before a shot was fired.. Screams filled the room. Darren drops to floor, blood spreading immediately across his chest. The policemen suddenly open fire but they miss their target as Frederick suddenly drops to the floor on his knees, blood dripping out of his mouth and nostrils, a sudden pain coursing through his entire system, his body feeling like it was on fire... He shouts in agony as the skin around his throat begin to peel off like it was being burned with acid..
