The Missionary's Journey - Episode 5
"So,what were you doing in this path?" the girl quietly asked.
"Umm, I overheard some boys saying there was a shortcut to my place and I followed them because I wanted to get home quick but I got lost and well, I don't know what really happened," he said through his teeth.
"Hahaha," the girl laughed, "that’s just pitiful, really, shouldn’t you know better? Following people you don’t know. You are quite stupid."
"Hey chill out, cut me some slack," Gabriel replied in anger.
"Cut me some what? huh, what are you saying? What does that even mean? Wait I know you na, you and your sister, you are the ones everyone has been talking about in school right? You and your family, you came from Lagos. I have heard your gist. No wonder, that explains a lot."
"What do you mean?" Gabriel stared, confused. "Wait, you attend Nzube Grammar School too? We just closed. Why aren’t you in uniform."
"O boy, you talk a lot o. Mind your business, let me take you to your place, I trust you know the way to your house or do you need me to carry you there too?"
Gabriel stared at her and then said, "No I will be fine."
They walked in silence and eventually arrived at his street.
Gabriel turned to face her. "Ummm, thanks a lot, for everything."
"Sure sure, city boy."
"And can you please keep what happened a secret? I am still struggling to get by in school, I don’t need another gossip."
The girl chuckled "yeah, the fact that your secret is safe with me."
Gabriel snorted at the girl.
"Well my name is Gabriel, what is yours?"
‘I am Ifeyinwa."
They shook hands

. "Well, later dumb boy." the girl turned to leave.
"Umm..hmm..wait," Gabriel stammered.
"What is it again? The girl asked with a brow raised. "Don’t tell me you don’t know the way to your house from here?"
"No o I know, that’s not it. You said you attend my school right? Since I came, I have been having issues getting to know things about the school and at times it’s quite lonely too. I have not been able to make friends there. Everyone is so different from people in the city.

. What I am saying is can we be friends? If it is okay with you."
"Huh? Awwn, city boy is lonely. Is that why you are now giving me speech?" she mocked.
"No..no..it’s…it’s not like that. I just.." Gabriel stammered.
"No worries, I will consider. I am in SS2C though."
"Really?" Gabriel face beamed. "I am in SS2A, our classes are not so far apart so maybe we could see during lunch time or break time as you guys call it here."
The girl sighed, "Hmm I will think about it. I got things to do too."
"Alright. Thanks again, bye." Gabriel waved at the girl as she walked away. He closely observed the girl and thought she was cute.
In the night, he didn’t say a word to his family. During dinner, his mother asked him why he arrived late but he said he got lost before he could find his way. She shook her head and Anita laughed at him while his father stifled a giggle. After dinner, he went to his room and laid on his bed thinking about Ifeyinwa and wondered why those men ran away. He didn’t know why but he was glad she came when she did, with that in mind he slept with a smile on his face.
