Happy Never After - Episode 17

What to do, what to do? She thought before an idea suddenly came into her mind.

Daniel watched her suspiciously as she talked on the phone for a few minutes.

“It’s Faith,” she replied, clearing her throat and disconnecting the call while pretending as if still talking.

“Yes, I am alright,” she said. “Okay, okay. Thanks.”

“Is everything okay?” he asked.

“Yes, she is just checking on me, excuse me,” she said, walking away into the room.

When she got into the room, she locked the door behind her. Her heart was still beating very fast. She sat on her bed for a while, to stop her body from shaking.

After getting out of the bath, she made sure she wrote things she had found out and things that seemed very strange ever since they started their honeymoon. She wasn’t exactly sure at first but now she was beginning to see that something was wrong.

Daniel didn’t come into the room for some time, her thought was that perhaps, he had gone to the basement. This gave her enough time to think about the call she had made earlier and now she was left with several questions.

Who was Hannah? Why did Daniel lie about her? What about the strange woman she used to see, why hadn’t she seen her in a while? Why was she suddenly scared of her husband? Why did he lie about Lucas?

She thought of calling Faith but she needed to be sure first, besides, Daniel was still within the house, she didn’t want to look suspicious.

She had slept off that night while wondering about the different things that had happened and when she woke up, she was surprised to see Daniel getting dressed.

“Are you going somewhere?” she asked, trying not to sound excited. She needed some time alone to sort out some things.

“Yes, we are,” he replied, coming towards her

. He gave her a good morning kiss before going back to the mirror.

“Where are we going?” asked she.

“To the restaurant that you wanted us to go yesterday.”

She was surprised. “But, you didn’t want to go.”

He shrugged. “I know, but that only made me look suspicious and I want to make things right between us. Besides. I understand it can get pretty boring being home all day, so, we will be going out to see the nice weather, the landscape and everything we can see.”

She smiled. “Well, I better get dressed.”

She had settled for a tank top and a pair of jeans. She wore an overall which had a pocket on both sides to prevent her from cold.

They had stopped to eat breakfast at the restaurant. She was happy to leave the house, it was beginning to creep her out. She also had the chance to get a better understanding of what was happening around her, especially with her husband.

She has just finished eating her food when she excused herself. She went to the bathroom, but with her phone.  She desperately needed to call Faith.

The phone rang for a while before it was finally picked.

“Hello, Faith. Thank God. I’ve been trying to call you. Can you hear me?”

“Yes, yes. I can hear you,” came the cold reply. Alicia knew she deserved that.

“What were you able to find about Fabian?” she asked.

“Why do you care?”

Alicia inhaled. “Please, Faith. I’m sorry but I want in. I want to know what happened with the whole murder case.”

“Why are you suddenly interested in him? Have you forgotten that you are married?”

“I know I deserve whatever unkind thing that comes out of your mouth but I am really scared, Faith. I think Daniel is keeping somethings from me.”

Her friend was quiet for a while. “What things?”

“I don’t know.”

She started by explaining everything that happened with Lucas, and then with the strange woman and then Hannah.

“And you are still staying with him?” Faith demanded. “If your instinct is telling you to run, why can’t you just run already?”

She inhaled. “It could be nothing but I have to find out first. I need your help.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“I’m going to forward a number to you right now, it is the number of Lucas wife, please, I need you to call her, tell her you are one of the sets of St Paul’s High School of ’97 and then, try to get close to her and pay her a visit.”

“Okay. Send the number.”

 While she was forwarding the number, a gentle knock sounded on the door.

“Honey, are you giving birth in there?”

She gasped, forwarded the number to Faith and quickly splashed some water at her face.

“I will be right out,” she shouted loud enough for him to hear. Then she opened the door.

“Sorry, running stomach,” she muttered before following her husband.

“Oh! My God,” she gushed as they got to the mountains. The scene was really beautiful. The grass was green and the sky even seemed bluer. There were several people either playing ball or just sitting down in the warm sun. There were also seats everywhere where couples could sit.

“Come on love, let’s have some fun,” he said, getting down from the car.

“I need to get out of these heels first,” she said but was surprised when her husband dragged her out playfully.

She excitedly got down from the car and followed him. Some minutes later, they got introduced to some of the people there and were soon caught in the game and conversation.

It was a popular place for couples to hang out. Alicia was super relieved to be with other people. She was hoping that someone else would recognize her husband but no one did.

“So, how long have you two been married?” asked Martha, a woman she was sitting with. Daniel was talking about sport with her husband and some other men.

“Just a week,” she replied, surprised that it hadn’t gone a bit longer than that.

“Wow, so this is your honeymoon,” said another lady. There were about four ladies where she was sitting. They kept on talking for a while. They reminded her of her friends and how much she had missed them. A couple of minutes later, she excused herself from the crowd as she badly needed to pee. Martha directed her towards the other side of the road which was safely hidden from the rest of the people.

She unzipped, pulled down her trousers and then her panties before squatting. A feeling of relief washed over her as she peed, she closed her eyes and in some minutes later, she was done.

They didn’t spend much time again and left half an hour later. When they got home that day, it was getting late. She was so tired she could barely stay awake. She slept off immediately her head hit the pillows only to wake up much later, he wasn’t beside her on the bed.

She checked the clock, it was some minutes to midnight. She was just standing up when she heard his car being driven out of the compound.

. She was surprised. Where could he be going?

Quickly, she rubbed her sleepy eyes and thought of calling him, but she changed her mind. She tried dialing Faith’s number but it was switched off. On an impulse, she tried dialing Fabian’s number as well and it began to ring aloud. At the same time, a song started playing somewhere around the house…wait, she knew that song. That was Fabian’s ringtone. Perhaps, she was still sleeping, she thought. She dialed the phone again and the song started again…it was playing from somewhere around the house….

Her heart began to beat frantically as she stood up from the bed and out of the room; she was climbing down the stairs while her hand kept redialing the number. Her heart raced faster when she got into the kitchen and she looked towards that secret door that had always been there…the sound was coming from there. Her head was screaming for her to run but her legs remained immovable.

Her chest kept rising and falling while her stomach was fast turning into jelly. Taking a deep breath, she lifted her hand towards the wooden door and pushed it…
