Happy Never After - Episode 22

“Oh my god, oh my god! Oh my F*cking God! You are not dead! You are real! You guys were married!”

Alicia said all at once pacing to and fro.

The woman couldn’t still talk but was just groaning.

Alicia realized she was yet to release the ropes tying her mouth and body so, quickly, she used the knife at the back of her hand to cut it.

The lady let out a gasp as she lay slouched on her chair. She was breathing with difficulty.

“How long have you been here?” Alicia asked.

“I don’t know,” replied the woman. “It’s, it’s been so, so, long.”

Alicia realized that the lady would definitely need medical attention. “We need to get you out of here, before he comes back,” she said, trying to lift the woman up. “I cannot believe that I am married to a monster, oh my God,” Alicia cried, raising the woman and putting her arm around her shoulder.

Hannah couldn’t breathe easily, she kept panting.

“No, hospital, no hospital, he will find …he will kill….”

“Please, we need to leave before he comes back.”

“No, no, he will kill us both…like he…like he…” she was beginning to shut her eye lids…

“Like he what? Did he kill someone? Did he kill Fabian?” she demanded.

The woman stared at her and shook her head. “No, not Fabian

. Who is Fabian?”

“Never mind, who did he kill?” she asked with urgency in her voice. “Please, tell me.”

“I will show you,” Hannah replied, pointing a finger towards the other end of the room.

Alicia frowned. The place was a bit darkened but she could hear a refrigerator running.

She stood up and  faced the angle. Her heart was beating fast as if trying to escape. She stopped in front of a large refrigerator and then looked back at Hannah who nodded weakly.

With trembling hands, Alicia reached for the top and opened it, slowly. Everything went silent as she did, the only thing she could hear was the sound of her own heartbeat.

A scream escaped her lips as she saw the body in the freezer….The body  was covered in ice. The man was dressed in what could have been a blue shirt, frozen blood was everywhere…but the face of the man was too familiar…it was Daniel!

Alicia slammed the freezer all of a sudden.

Her stomach twisted in horror and confusion. She felt nausea coming all of a sudden and she shut her eyes. This didn’t make any sense.

“Who was that?” she asked, even though she had the answer to what she was thinking.

“That is Daniel….that was the man you should have married….the one you are married to, is his twin monster…David! He was my own husband; I made the same mistake you made….”

Alicia lost her balance and staggered but she held on to the wall.

“I don’t understand.”

“David and Daniel were brothers. David was the monster of the family. He was just pure evil. Everyone including their parents was afraid of him…he killed his father mistakenly one day and he was put into prison. Their mother died of grief afterward, giving all the property to Daniel. Daniel later somehow, asked for the case to be dropped. David was sick, mentally and the lawyer attributed the murder to his sickness. Out of all the properties, their mother left David this Lakehouse, but he wanted more, started threatening his brother. I was his doctor for some time, but I fell in love with him and I thought I could fix him. I thought our love would fix him, I wanted to make him better. As the code of our work demanded, relationship between doctors and patients was not allowed, so we moved in together and I assigned him to another doctor.

One day, we learned that Daniel had left the country, and David got really angry. He had been threating Daniel for a long time and I actually advised Daniel to leave the country. I realized he was obsessed with Daniel, he wanted all he had, so I had to reach out to Daniel.  David must have found out, he was so mad, he stabbed me…then he tied me up.

He punished me every day and would tell me he loved me….” she whimpered.

. “One day, he said he found a way to take everything back from Daniel. David had always loved hacking, I think he found a way to get into Daniel’s social media account where he discovered you. He told me everything about you. He said he was going to use you take back everything he lost. He said he would kill Daniel once he gets back to the country to marry his bride and then he would be the new Daniel.”

Alicia’s hands trembled as water trickled down her cheeks. She had married the other brother…memories of him touching her, making love to her  and kissing her flashed through her mind and her heart broke into pieces. The pain drove her into a state of despair and she dug her nails into her skin….it was too much! She cried hot tears!  She had been sleeping with a monster! Fabian had been right!

“So, that means, I never got to meet Daniel, I have been with David all along…”

“That’s right,” replied Hannah.

Her phone rang suddenly and so shocked was she that the phone dropped. She was about picking the phone when she heard the gate opening.

Hannah must have heard that as well for she looked up all of a sudden, even though she still looked like someone who would faint at any time.

Alicia’s hands were shaking terribly and she walked closer to the door and closed it, she also bolted it behind her.

Then she backed off and listened. She looked at the phone on the floor, she couldn’t dare go closer.

She could hear as the gate closed by itself and then the sound of his car as it halted all of a sudden, he must have pulled the brakes really fast.

She walked to Hannah and crouched beside her. Both their faces were wide with fear.

She could feel the throbbing of her own eyes as they waited…

They both heard his footsteps above them. He was in the house.

His voice was as clear as crystal, sending chills to their spine when he said, “Hello ladies,  daddy is home!”
