Happy Never After - Episode 21

No, she couldn’t. Not after everything that had just happened.

“The remaining passenger is here,” said a woman.

“Thank God,” said another.

“Everyone pay up, let’s be on our way.”

The man began to collect the passenger’s money from the front. Meanwhile, Alicia was busy texting Faith.

“Babe, I cannot go back there. I am just about to leave for Lagos.”

Her reply came in-

“You have to; you know he is innocent of the murder charges. Daniel might not be who you think he is. In fact, I think he is more dangerous than we think. Send me your address; I will come as soon as possible. But you have to go back, do this for Fabian after everything you have put him through. If Daniel has Fabian’s phone, then he knows something. I gotta go now, I’m in the hospital with Lucas, I am about to go in and talk to him. His wife thought I am his friend. “

Reluctantly, Alicia excused herself, ignoring the pair of eyes that followed her.

“Are you not going again?” asked the driver.

“No, I have to go back home,” she replied as sadly as she could.

Quickly, she crossed to the other side to stop a bike man…she couldn’t think. What would she tell her husband when she gets home? Where would she say she had gone to and why would he believe her?

She would swear on her life that he knew what she was up to but…she couldn’t keep on pretending forever.

She waved down a bike and gave her the address of her lake house

She picked her own spare key from the bag as her bike left, she checked her phone and was surprised that her husband hadn’t even called her. Could he still be within the store premises?

Well, that wasn’t an issue. She quickly opened the gate and rushed into the house.  Finally, she opened the front door and walked to the kitchen. She didn’t know what she was looking for but she was determined to find something.

The room was still as she had left it. She walked to the closet and opened it. The suit was still there. She picked it up and folded it into her bag.

Later, she ran into their room and went to his closet. She had no idea what she was looking for but she kept on looking. She found a wallet in one of his pockets; she brought it out and opened it. A ring dropped from the wallet and rolled to somewhere on the floor. She bent down to pick it up. It was the same as hers, except that it was engraved with –H and D 4ever. She inhaled and opened the wallet, she brought out a picture of Daniel with a mustache. He looked different but it was him anyway. He was sitting with a woman. She had her hair braided, a dimple on each cheek. She was in a red top and they were smiling at each other.

Alicia knew who this was, immediately. Who else but Hannah?

Her phone rang suddenly that she almost fainted. Quickly she checked the caller, it still wasn’t her husband. It was her sister.

“Hello, Lydia?”

“Hello sis, I got your address two days ago. I am on my way, cook something delicious.”

“No, no, don’t come now, Lydia,” she said but the call had ended.

“Shit!” Alicia cursed under her breath.

She took a picture of both of them and then hid the wallet in her trousers.

After this, she checked everywhere, including under the bed but she couldn’t find anything again.

She stopped all of a sudden, thinking she heard something.  It was like a sound of someone moving…but somewhere below her.

Her heart began to race….was he back? She thought and quickly looked around the room for something sharp. She found none. She bit her lips and stopped suddenly as she heard something creak again.

A bead of sweat ran down her brow, but she could tell that the movement was not close by.  She raced to the sitting room and checked, the gate was still closed. She rushed to the kitchen and then to where the cutlery was kept. She was so nervous that she dropped the cutlery holder and everything clattered on to the floor.

Shit!

She picked up a bread knife and a good knife. She hid one at the back of her trousers and took one in her hand.

Then she waited.

Few seconds later, there was a push…it wasn’t coming from the kitchen, or from the room.

. Fear exploded inside her as she realized where it was coming from. The basement!

“Fabian! I’m coming!” she said in her mind as she rushed out of the kitchen and down the corridor. She climbed down the stairs and saw the blue-painted door but it was locked.

“Fabian are you there!” she asked, knocking the door loudly.

There came a loud groan.

Alicia almost cried out, Fabian was in there! She needed to open this door.

“I am coming, let me find the keys!”

Her shirt clung to her skin due to her sweat, she was terrified and nervous at the same time.

She rushed to their room and opened all the drawers but found nothing.  But then, she realized it would be with him. Quickly, she went back to the kitchen, found a hammer in the cupboard and rushed back to the basement.

She began to hit the padlock with the hammer with all her might.

“I’m so sorry, Fabian. I am coming to save you,” she cried, ignoring her phone which was now ringing.

Finally, the padlock snapped and she dropped the hammer. With her leg, she opened the door but the basement was dark.

Quickly, she flashed the light of her phone to look for a switch on the wall, when put on the light.

“Fabian,” she cried before turning around.

When she saw who it was, she gasped. It was a woman; her lips were plastered together so she couldn’t make any sound. Her body was covered in blood, but she was still alive. She was tied to a chair and was looking at Alicia helplessly. Her hair was braided…

“Oh my God!” Alicia gasped. “You are Hannah aren’t you?”
