When A Man Wants - Episode 20

LISA

I was busy washing the plates while Fred was rinsing but this was not why I had brought him here. This was the perfect place to get the DNA sample without the mother or Vincent getting suspicious.  I could get it using some hair of his head, his blood, saliva or his finger print.

“You do know you have a lovely hair right?” I asked after we were done washing the plates.

He looked at me while wiping his hands with the napkin.

“That’s absurd Lisa.”

I was surprised. That boy is so rude.

“You know it’s rude to talk to a grown-up like that?”

“You know it’s rude to invite someone to your house and make them do the dishes they didn’t even eat with!” He snapped at me.

I almost laughed out.

“Look at this little cockroach!”

He grimaced at threw the napkin at me.

“You know I like you Freddie?” I said, squatting close to him.

“No you don’t.”

“Why do you think that?”

“Because I know you don’t.”

I sighed. This would be so difficult.

. You know what? I am sorry for making you do the dishes. Can we start all over?”

HE stood akimbo and nodded.

“Alright.  I am sorry if I made you think that. The truth is, your dad has been punching Vincent too often these days and that is so unkind of him. Don’t you think so?”

He looked sober and nodded. “ I am sorry about that. Tommy can be so difficult sometimes.”

“Do you miss your real dad?” I asked and he nodded.

“Would you like to write a letter to him?” I asked and he looked up excitedly. If he writes the letter, I could ask him to seal it with his saliva and I could use that.

“That’s lame Lisa. Even for you!” He retorted. “I am  six, I am not 2 years old. He is dead. I am out. You are so weird!” He then walked out of the room.

I couldn’t believe my ears and my eyes. I should have just made him lick a paper and use the saliva or at least cut him accidentally with a knife. I just ruined everything!

I hissed when my phone rang.

 It was a message, I was to come to class immediately. Doctor Randy was waiting for me! This is so bad!

I quickly took my phone and left a whatsapp message.

“Hell Shrek. Plan is changed. Another time. I got to go to class right now! Call me when you get this!”

ANIKA

“Are you through with helping Lisa?”

“Yes mum.” Fred replied. “Where is Vincent?”

“He went to his room. He will soon be out.” I replied.

Then the boy went to the TV and began to change the stations….

Vincent soon came out. Once Freddie sighted him he rushed to him….Vincent was showing him something on his tab.

“Oh! You got a video game! That is so cool!” Then together they went to vincent’s room. Later Vincnet came out alone. I could tell that my son was already playing the video game in his room.

“You look …better and bigger Vince. Have you been working out?” I asked before I could stop myself.

He smiled and sat down on the same settee with me. He was typing.

“Yes, I have been working out.”

“Really? It suits you. You look….” I sought for the right word. “…macho.”

He laughed and typed.

“Lisa wanted me to be strong enough to withstand whatever punches life may throw at me.”

I knew he was referring to Tommy and I couldn’t help but laugh aloud.

“I understand. It suits you seriously. I think I like it.” I teased, winking at him.

“Would you like to see my abs….”

I thought I didn’t read that right.  Then I looked at him. I could see he was being serious…so I shook my head.

“You are nuts . What do you think your girlfriend qould say when you are showing me your abs….”

He smiled and typed. “I was just joking. My abs are sacred.”

That made me laugh more.

Being with him makes me so happy. I feel like I could tell him anything and I just loved the way he makes me laugh even without trying. Its like being with an old friend, a very close…old friend…..a very very very close old friend……

“Something happened recently Vincent. I went to my former place of work at a restaurant only to find out…..

“Sorry guys….” Lisa came out again. She was fully dressed and was holding a bag.

“I am sorry guys! Need to go to class right now. Will soon be back. Sorry I can’t cook for you ANika. I just ordered Pizza for you.”

I smiled. “It’s okay Lisa. Thank You. Pizza is good.”

Then she went to Vincent, embraced him and said something to him. Later she waved to us and was soon driving away.

“So you haven’t told me how you two met.”

He smiled and typed. “What do you mean?”

“I mean..the two of you.”

“There is no two of us. We are more like friends.”

“Friends?  You sure?”

He nodded.

“You stay together and you seem very close…”

“Well, it’s a long story ….”

“Well, you can always tell me….” I replied. Getting more comfortable now that Lisa was gone…

He sighed.

“You don’t know where to start from…well, maybe I should start. Vincent, I think someone is stalking me.”

“Really? Who?” He typed.

“I don’t know. Someone that probably knows Fred or that was close to him but I just don’t know why. I found a picture of mine somewhere in an old place and now I couldn’t find it again and I don’t know who might have taken it. its just so confusing.

He took my hand…again….

“Why are you scared of your husband Anika…and what picture are you talking about?”

Okay, I could hear me quite alright and he was doing that thing with his thumb again…it was making me all fuzzy and the way he was rubbing the middle of my palm softly…..I just couldn’t take it …..I stood up immediately, startling him.

“Why do you always do that me?” I demanded. My voice was breaking now…

He seemed confused and was beginning to type but I was not ready for that. My body was heating up and I just couldn’t understand all the emotions that were boiling inside me…

“Ouch!”

I heard Freddie scream and as I turned around, I realized he was at the entrance…

How and when did he get there?

I quickly rushed to him….he was taking with a pizza boy and in his hand was a large box of pizza.

“What happened Freddie?” I rushed to him, kneeling down.

“When did the pizza boy get here?” I asked, cheking him all over.

“You and Vince didn’t hear the door rang and I did. So I came to answer it and something stung me…” He explained…

“So sorry about that madam. He is okay now.The Pizza was ordered by Miss Lisa. Please, enjoy your day.” The boy left hurriedly and I slammed the door.

It was so confusing.

“Let me see your hand Freddie.”

He showed me his hand. There was a drop of blood on it .

“We have First Aid.” Vincent typed but I couldn’t wait anymore.

“I am sorry Vince but we have to go.” I said without thinking.

“But mum..i am okay. I promise.” Freddie whined but I grabbed my bag. I didn’t wanto spend one more minute with Vincent else I might go mad.

Without explaining, I took my son and opened the door without bidding Vincent goodbye.

While I drove out of the vicinity…I saw him standing at the doorway through the side mirror….his hand was on his waist while the other was on the door……I have seen that posture before…..that was how Fred was standing the day I was angry with him…

Oh God! What is happening to me!

MEAWHILE.....

The man in the pizza cloths changed out of his costume and was now wearing his hoodie......then he dialled a number...

"Hello Lisa....its Shrek....I got the blood sample. Never let a lady do the work of a man." He smiled and dropped the phone to his lap. In his hand was a white plastic transparent bag and it was a cotton wool stained with blood.
