Baby
Day 2.
Work and pressure, always synonymous!
“Madam, how was your health?”
“Sani! I was never sick. I just had a bad day at work”
“Madam, today go better pass yesterday”
“Amen”
Sani was the security man at her work place. His sense of humor was her secret source of happiness. She always looked up to a conversation with him.
The pressure you get working with an advertising company is no joke. She had lots of accounts to manage coupled with her yesterday’s misfortune. She was engrossed with her table sorting papers, when her phone rang.
“Hello”
“Hello dearie” came the voice from the other end of the line.
“Nicolette, what is amusing you. Oya start talking” she said
“My dear, I am late”
“Late? You do not have an appointment with me” she replied confused. Nicolette began to laugh uncontrollably.
“Nicolette, I have lots of work to do. stop calling me when ever you are bored, am not your nanny. Love you dear. Have…”
“Aunty!!! Calm down. your baby is one month pregnant” Nicolette said excited.

. Mixed feelings built in her. “Dear life, why?” she knew she was no saint but why….
“Madam, say something na.” Nicolette shouted excitedly.
“I…..I am happy for you. Congratulations dear, you deserve a baby shower” she replied. Her words felt like someone else’s.
“Thank you dear. Enjoy your day. Love you” Nicolette replied joyously and ended the call
Picking the telephone she dialed her secretary. “Cancel all my meetings for today” she ordered.
“Yes ma” replied the secretary.
Nicolette. She met Nicolette at the university. They have since then been close. She was few years older than Nicolette, yet it never affected their friendship. Nicolette got married a year ago. Nicolette got married at age forty and behold, she already was pregnant. She on the other hand has been trying for twenty years! Sometimes it takes just once, and other times you keep trying and the babies will be running.
Do not get it wrong. Life is not fair. Why can’t she totally share in her friend’s joy? It was not jealousy. All she felt was left out. It was like God deliberately skips her each time it was her turn to receive a child from him.

. Children come from God she was told. At this point in her life, she was beginning to doubt the possibilities of God answering all prayers in His own way.
She picked her bag, she was searching for some contact card. She felt something unusual in her bag. She brought it out and it was a wrapped box. She opened it. It was a car key. She saw a note too in the box, it read, “HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, LOVE”
The worries of life succeeded in making her forget their anniversary. She owed him all. He was too good for words. She had a gift to buy. She picked up her bag and dashed out of the office.
